A chapter in the history of Colorado State University has closed with the death of former football coach Don “Tuffy” Mullison.
Mullison, who also played football and wrestled at the school, died Saturday of prostate cancer. He was 89.
He followed legendary coach Bob Davis at Colorado A&M and was the second former Aggies player to become the school’s football coach. Hans Wagner was the first. Mullison’s term was from 1956-61.
In 1957, the school became Colorado State University and the nickname became Rams. CSU posted a 19-40-1 record during his term, including records of 6-4 in 1958 and 1959.
Mullison was a player when the Aggies went to the 1949 Raisin Bowl and he twice gained All-America status as a wrestler. He was inducted into the CSU athletic hall of fame in 1990.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Bohlender Funeral Home, 121 W. Olive St. in Fort Collins.
