Is this the most CSU proposal ever?

CSU graduates Kyle Griffin and Laura Krause got engaged, with the help of an engraved brick at the university's new stadium, on Saturday.

Not so smooth, but oh so special.

That's how you could describe CSU alumnus Kyle Griffin's marriage proposal last week.

Griffin, 27, said he knew he wanted to involve CSU football somehow when he asked his then-girlfriend — and now-fiance — fellow Ram grad Laura Krause, 25, to marry him.

And when the university announced the brick campaign for its new on-campus stadium, it hit him like a ton of bricks.

"I just kind of knew that was the perfect way to do it," said Griffin, who now lives in Colorado Springs, a short drive from Krause, who's in Pueblo. "It would last as long as the stadium and would be there one day when our kids go to (CSU games)."

So Griffin purchased a brick with a simple inscription: "We met at CSU and I knew you were the one. Laura, will you marry me? Kyle"

CSU alumni Kyle Griffin and Laura Krause got engaged, with the help of an engraved brick at the university's new stadium, on Saturday.

The proposal was planned for Saturday and Griffin got Krause up to Fort Collins under the ruse of going to a friend's housewarming party. But Krause was already catching on, Griffin said.

And after Griffin took a wrong turn on College Avenue and had to approach the stadium from another side, Krause spotted both of their families strategically hiding behind the stadium's New Belgium Porch.

Griffin's plan was blown. Krause said she knew a proposal was coming, but the brick was a complete surprise.

After coming up a weekend earlier to secretly find their brick, Griffin knew its exact location. And, walking among the other engraved bricks, he stopped when he found it and pointed out the romantic inscription before getting down on one knee to propose.

Krause, of course, said yes.

"It was really special," she said. "CSU is a big part of both of our lives. Now it will be there forever."

The two met during their senior year at CSU. Griffin, a first-generation college student, studied health and exercise science and worked with the football team throughout his time there.

Krause earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees from the university in environmental health. When she graduated — first in 2014, like Kyle, and then with her master's in 2016 — she became part of the third generation in her family to do so.

"My grandparents met painting the 'A,'" Krause said. "It doesn’t get much more CSU than that."

But a proposal carved in stone at the school's stadium? That's up there, too.
