Communities across our nation are in need of the next generation of citizen service leaders: leaders who give of themselves to help their vulnerable neighbors; leaders who strengthen, support, and extend the capacity of local healthcare, education, and other institutions; leaders who understand and embrace the challenges and sacrifice that go with making positive change; and leaders who work to bridge the differences between us that can sometimes divide us.

Project Horseshoe Farm is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that since its founding in 2007 has been helping to prepare a generation of emerging citizen service leaders. In 2009, we created a unique one-year Community Health Volunteer Service and Learning Fellowship geared to top recent college graduates and future leaders. Since then, more than 150 Horseshoe Farm Fellows have offered 250,000+ hours of their time, talents, and energies to this rigorous, intensive, and immersive year of volunteer service and learning.

With ongoing teaching and mentorship, Fellows volunteer in local schools to help small groups of students. They volunteer as “health partners” to support seniors and adults living with mental illness. They help lead programs at local community centers and volunteer with local supported housing programs and nursing homes. They live and learn in one of our three wonderful partner communities (Greensboro, AL, Perry County, AL, and Pomona, CA) while participating in Horseshoe Farm's time-tested approach to strengthening community health.

Through its work, Horseshoe Farm is creating an important new institutional form dedicated to the mission of building on the strengths of local communities, improving the health and quality of life of our vulnerable neighbors, and preparing citizen service leaders for tomorrow’s communities.

Community Health Fellow

June 2019 Marion, AL
“This fellowship opportunity has exposed me to a variety of experiences, ideas, principles, and people that have taught me an incredible amount of information, techniques, and approaches that would not have been possible by following a traditional academic curriculum purely. Learning about real-world obstacles and adversities faced by the population we served will undoubtedly enhance my ability to care for similar persons in my professional pursuits. I could not possibly emphasize the benefits of this opportunity any more. ”
