Professional Development Sessions - Spring 2024
This series is designed for CSU Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows and includes virtual webinars and in-person workshops covering topics such as communication and research skills, job market success,  and leadership.

A description of each session is included below.

Registration is required three days before in-person "Lunch and Learns" and 24-hours in advance of virtual webinars.

Spring 2024 Professional Development Session Descriptions
NEGOTIATING YOUR FIRST JOB OFFER | FEBRUARY 2 | 12-2 PM | 207 WEST ROCKWELL | In-person only

All job offers require negotiation. This lunch and learn is an interactive negotiation-training session. It provides graduate students and postdocs with hands-on training about how to negotiate a job offer skillfully and with greater confidence. During this interactive session, participants will engage in negotiation exercises followed by expert debriefing to talk participants through their negotiation process to pinpoint best strategies to reach a mutually beneficial solution. Because of the intensive nature of this process, this session is limited to 45 participants. 


BUILDING PRODUCTIVE RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY RELATIONSHIPS | FEBRUARY 6 | 12-1:30 PM | LSC 304-06 |  In-person only

This lunch and learn session guides attendees through the process of identifying how to engage with current and future mentors as they build their research portfolio and skills. Learn how to target what steps, conversations, and resources will be most useful in creating a development plan specific to your career goals and your research interests.


SHARED EQUITY LEADERSHIP | FEBRUARY 21 | 12-1:30 PM | Click to join Zoom meeting

This virtual session explores innovative models in leadership that work through diverse and distributed networks. Attendees will learn about and engage in leadership training exercises that are rooted in principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The session focuses on emerging models of shared leadership from the American Council on Education and the USC Pullias Center. The approaches learned in this session will be broadly applicable to all postdocs and graduate students who seek jobs in industry, academe, or agencies. 


NAVIGATING CONFLICT MANAGEMENT | FEBRUARY 27 | 12-1:30 PM | Click to join Zoom meeting

This virtual session explores key strategies to identify how you can better understand conflict as it arises in your graduate or professional work. Luiza Cliver will share how participants can best manage general tensions and differences of opinion through more seemingly intractable challenges with supervisors and colleagues. Cliver will also cover resources available at Colorado State University. The session is open to GradCO students and fellows.


RESEARCH AND WELLBEING | MARCH 5 | 12-1:30 PM | LSC 304-06   |  In-person only

This lunch and learn brings to campus Dr. Roel Sneider an award-winning geophysicist and author of “The Joy of Science: Seven Principles for Scientists Seeking Happiness, Harmony, and Success.” Attendees will learn about how to create harmony and build a successful career when work-life balance becomes challenging given the day-to-day pressures of academic life. The strategies covered will apply to postdocs and graduate students from all disciplines.


DEVELOP YOUR PERSONAL BRAND | MARCH 27 | 12-1:30 PM | LSC 308-10 |  In-person only

This  lunch and learn will provide students with a framework and exercises to develop their public-facing personal brand. If you want to freshen your LinkedIn profile or your web presence for the job market, Amy Cailene can help you design an authentic and meaningful brand to connect with future employers and colleagues.


IDENTIFYING ALTERNATIVE CAREER PATHS TO ACADEMIA | APRIL 3 | 12-1:30 PM | Click to join Zoom

In this virtual session Amy Cailene will guide participants through methods to translate academic skills to suit careers and jobs outside the university. If you are curious about how to find jobs in industry or other agencies where you can use your advanced degree, you will benefit from Cailene’s keen career insights. 


MAPPING AND DATA: A SKILL TO SET YOU APART FROM THE REST OF YOUR FIELD | APRIL 16 | 12-1:30 PM | LSC 308-10 |  In-person only

This lunch and learn with the Geospatial Centroid will introduce attendees to the types of projects and skills that involve geospatial technologies across disciplines. Experts from the Centroid will share their varied career paths, both technical and educational, so that attendees can learn of the multiple ways and added value that geospatial skills enable to support or focus a career. The session will also include information on CSU resources.


INDUSTRY, LEGAL, AND AGENCY CAREER PERSPECTIVES | APRIL 24 | 12-1:30 PM  | Click to join Zoom

In this virtual panel sponsored by CSU STRATA, CSU Alumni will speak from their experiences about how they are building careers outside the academy. The session includes an opportunity for attendees to ask questions and for advice from the panel. An annual event, the conversations are inspiring, and for many attendees, the ideas shared are career game-changers
